Mother in Georgia Loses Her Life While Defending Infant From Gun-Toting Father

Jessica Arrendale’s last actions will always be remembered, because they saved the life of her 6-month-old daughter, Colbie. Arrendale, who was in her mid-30s, had gone out last Saturday night with Antoine Davis, the 30-year-old father of her child. According to police, Davis had a little too much to drink, and the former Marine became threatening and abusive.

It’s believed that Davis chased Arrendale up the stairs to the third floor of Arrendale’s home. Police believe that Arrendale tried to defend herself with a baseball bat, even though she was carrying Colbie up the stairs as well. Police believe that Davis overpowered Arrendale, and used the bat to strike her several times. When Arrendale managed to break away and lock herself and Colbie in the bathroom, police say that Davis came back with an assault rifle. He burst through the door, and shot Arrendale in the head as she held the baby.

Somehow, Arrendale fell over the open toilet. She dropped Colbie into the toilet bowl, and managed to cover the bowl with her body to shield the baby from Davis’ view. The truly astonishing part for authorities is that she fell in a direction completely opposite of what should have happened. Arrendale’s mother, Teresa Inniello, has told authorities that the family believes that Davis would have shot the baby as well, but since she was hidden, he didn’t. Instead, he went to another room and used the gun to take his own life.

The baby was recovered 13 hours later, when police finally stormed the house. Colbie has been taken to the hospital, where she is being monitored after a possible traumatic brain injury.

According to Davis’ two older daughters, who were also in the house but somehow were not involved with the events, their father brought a gun upstairs, and they heard Arrendale screaming. Then they heard the gunshots. They ran out of the house as quickly as they could, ending up with their grandmother. Tamaira Chesley, the mother of Davis’ two older daughters, told reporters that Davis had struggled with depression.
